The Truman Foundation is pleased to honor Brigadier General Bryan W. Wampler, U.S. Army (Retired) for more than 32 years of distinguished military service. He is the Executive Director of the Frontier Museum of the U.S. Army Foundation where he leads the campaign to build and support a newly designed museum that will be located on Fort Leavenworth, Kansas.
Growing up in Kansas, Bryan Wampler began his military career enlisting as a combat engineer in 1983. He was commissioned as a Second Lieutenant in 1985 through the Reserve Officers’ Training Corps program at Emporia State University where he received a Bachelor of Science degree. He continued his education receiving degrees from the State University of New York, Baker University, and the Army War College.
Completing Armor Cavalry qualification, he served with the 1st Battalion, 635th Armor as a tank platoon leader, battalion scout platoon leader, executive officer, and tank company commander. Upon promotion to Major and a branch transfer to Field Artillery, he served as Headquarters Commandant and Fire Support Officer of the 35th Infantry Division. Assigned to the 130th Field Artillery Brigade, he served as the Operations Officer and S3, 1st Battalion, 127th Field Artillery. General Wampler went on to serve as Assistant Fire Support Coordinator, 35th Division Artillery. He then commanded both the 3rd Battalion, 123rd Field Artillery, and then the 2nd Battalion, 129th Regiment (Regional Training Institute). During this period, he qualified as a Multifunctional Logistician. Assigned to the 95th Division he served as the G4, Commander, 3rd Brigade, and Chief of Staff.
Brigadier General Wampler mobilized in support of Operations Iraqi and Enduring Freedom. He served as the Chief, Strategic Plans, U.S. Army Materiel Command Southwest Asia, Multi-National Corps-Iraq, Camp Victory, Baghdad, Iraq; and Army Central/Coalition Forces Land Component Command, Camp Arifjan, Kuwait and Afghanistan.
Upon return from deployment, he served as the Deputy Chief of Staff, U.S. Army Materiel Command. He later commanded the 78th Training Division and then the 143rd Sustainment Command (Expeditionary), deploying in support of Operation Enduring Freedom in Kuwait, Qatar, and Jordan.
Brigadier General Wampler retired from military service in 2015. His top awards and decorations include the Legion of Merit with Oak Leaf cluster, the Bronze Star medal, and the Meritorious Service medal with four Oak Leaf clusters. Permanent unit citations include the Joint Meritorious Unit Award, Meritorious Unit Commendation with Oak Leaf cluster, and the Superior Unit Award. He and his wife Jennifer live in Lenexa, Kansas.
