The annual Truman Birthday Luncheon is open to the public and attended by hundreds of interested individuals, from civic leaders and judges, to international students as representatives of foreign countries.
The main luncheon event is the presentation of The Harry S. Truman Good Neighbor Award to a prominent individual who is recognized for exemplary service to their community, the nation, and the world. Also awarded is the Philip Pistilli Silver Veteran’s Medal and eight Scholarships in the field of international studies and public service. These scholarships promote Mr. Truman’s keen interest in education. They fulfill his belief that the exchange of ideas and better communication can bridge the gap in worldwide differences and help lead to peace and harmony among all nations and peoples.
Among luncheon attendees are Foundation’s invited guests of approximately fifty international students who are studying at nearby colleges and universities. Each student is photographed while shaking hands with the Truman Good Neighbor Award Honoree. The Foundation arranges for the distribution of the photographs to the students, their families, and hometown news media.
