Michael Neer served as a career Army officer for over 31 years, commanding units at the company, battalion, and brigade levels. His assignments included the United States Army Infantry Training Center, the 5th Special Forces Group (Vietnam), and the 82nd Airborne Division. He served two tours of duty with the United States Army Europe.
He was commanding officer of the Sunflower Army Ammunition Plant, DeSoto, Kansas from 1984 to 1987.
Among Col. Neer’s many awards and decorations are the Combat Infantry Badge, the Defense Superior Service Medal, the Legion of Merit, the Bronze Star, the Defense Meritorious Service Medal, the Army Meritorious Service Medal, and the Parachutist’s Badge.
Since retiring from the Army, Colonel Neer was appointed by Governor Kathleen Sebelius to be a Commissioner on the Kansas Commission on Veterans’ Affairs. After serving for eight years, Kansas Governor Sam Brownback appointed him Chairman of the Commission in 2013. He and his wife reside in Overland Park, Kansas.
